I am divided and I can't decide. I blame having to make this decision on the cat, Lexi, I am looking at you. Do you remember this <a href="http://janinerae.blogspot.com/2008/09/breakfast-nook-with-side-of-blinds.html">blog post</a>, where I introduced you to my cute little nook and lovely blinds? I loved those blinds, there were the top down bottom up style by Levolor so we could have a nice view of the trees and hide the parking lot by day and also didn't have to be a walk by aquarium by night. Privacy with a view! I got a pretty sweet discount on the blinds thanks to my friend Betsy but still spent a pretty $90 on them. What's the plural of blinds? Do you saw blind if you are only talking about one window set? Or do you says blinds for one set and blindes for multiple? Focus!</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: justify;">Back to the issue and why I said " I love<u>d</u> them". A few months after we hung the blinds, Lexi got on the table and leaned on the top of the blinds causing them to dent in the middle. She is not a heavy cat by any means so I was able to undent it, although you could slightly tell the blinds weren't perfect anymore. Le sigh. Knowing that I spent $90 on the blinds, I lived with the defect. Well fast forward to this week and I come home to half the blinds on the floor. Sad face. Lexi had gotten on the table again and chewed through the stings on one side. The only fix was to tie an ugly knot, not going to fly for my type A, detail focused, neat freak personality. Unfortunately, I don't have the funds to run out and buy another full priced Levolor top down cellular shade. So what is the solution??</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: justify;">I have been thinking about putting up bamboo blinds in the living room for a while. A la <a href="http://www.younghouselove.com/">Young House Love</a> style as seen here:</div><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhyHY_hkmgveLmoArmjHrxx0oJ7RUVLMgW5XIcEN6PZQz6U_k0GP38Gcv0lftoH6RAUOZjGBMDG_Ixu9tNCiAET8DUi9L6G2KhqKsCr2sW4Ung25plT1Q7-nhhou0XNIccQcZz9wPdqFaVW/s1600/den-family-room-with-floor-.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhyHY_hkmgveLmoArmjHrxx0oJ7RUVLMgW5XIcEN6PZQz6U_k0GP38Gcv0lftoH6RAUOZjGBMDG_Ixu9tNCiAET8DUi9L6G2KhqKsCr2sW4Ung25plT1Q7-nhhou0XNIccQcZz9wPdqFaVW/s400/den-family-room-with-floor-.jpg" width="300" /> </a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">So I am thinking this is a good opportunity to hang matching bamboo blinds on all the windows downstairs. I looked into ordering top down bottom up blinds from Levolor and was shocked by the $400 + price tag. Lowes Hardware has the size and color that I like for a mere $40 however they aren't top down style. It won't be a problem for the window and sliding door in the living room since I don't plan to put those down very often. However, in the kitchen, I don't want to have the blinds closed all the time and miss out on the view and natural light but I also don't want to provide a 24 hour a day Truman show for my neighbors by keeping the blinds up all the time. </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">I have come up with a solution, fear not! But I have only visualized in my head and really can't make up my mind if it will look really nice or really silly. So I am asking for your help and rather than try to explain my vision, I have created a helpful Photoshop depiction of it:</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg4KDXsWNtIT8UDWcjAvAwVahuWM0wAIS7AZjrVH6vSn3j9JxE-6nFtXn9Hi0WPcVXQyJsu71QEFDln5RBv0-1CE-jZgPoVG_gmiZrPbW_rfdSxnYV_ammKwRV0_tIOdh-1rna2tVgG0hrw/s1600/Untitled-2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg4KDXsWNtIT8UDWcjAvAwVahuWM0wAIS7AZjrVH6vSn3j9JxE-6nFtXn9Hi0WPcVXQyJsu71QEFDln5RBv0-1CE-jZgPoVG_gmiZrPbW_rfdSxnYV_ammKwRV0_tIOdh-1rna2tVgG0hrw/s400/Untitled-2.jpg" width="300" /> </a></div><div style="text-align: justify;">I am thinking of building a shelf like divider about two feet down from the top of the window. Then attaching the new bamboo blinds to the divider. That way I can still have the view and light from the top of the window but the privacy on the bottom and the savings of $400 beans in my pocket. I think once the white glossy divider is up the tan window trim/frame will look gross, so I would get some metal paint and paint the trim that shows on the top. Do you understand what I mean despite the messy Photoshop job? </div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: justify;">What do you think? Do you think that will look good? I plan to eventually replace the chairs with white fabric ones so they pop against the new bamboo blinds. This idea will also prevent Lexi from chewing on the strings or leaning on the blinds. </div>Janinehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05490459139700935904noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9173190871451477776.post-29561630178907691912010-05-27T09:54:00.002-04:002010-10-26T11:16:10.220-04:00I'm a Doormat<div style="text-align: justify;">Just trying to be clever in the title, not really a doormat, hehe. Quick update then let's move on to the fun stuff: I won't be selling my condo!! yay! Long story short, the market is over saturated with houses in my price range so I wouldn't be able to get a fair price for my little place. So now that I am staying put, on to the fun stuff like continuing to make my home perfectly me! As <a href="http://www.sarahrichardsondesign.com/">Sarah Richardson</a> would say, "You can have the home of your dreams now." Just a little bit in love with her! </div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br />
</div><div style="border: medium none; text-align: justify;">Any who, back to the matter at hand... the doormat. Those of you that know me, we'll pretty much if you are reading this blog you are either my friend or mom, hi mom!, so you know the story of what happen to my last doormat. We won't go into those sad details today. Today, we will discuss a new doormat and entry way! yay! I would like to power wash my front landing and stairs and get a new doormat and possibly some potted plants? I figure I can keep them alive if they are outdoors, right? maybe? Also, now that I have the whole landing to myself (tehehe), small victory = 1 Janine, 0 he who may not be named ;), I figure I can expand my front door decor. (It rhymes, deal with it.) </div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: justify;">So here is what I am thinking:</div><div class="separator" style="border: medium none; clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjKwaSnmbwJVGhJ7uNBtUIP-ZSv-ok-tP3PcUTTus4z1M_G8wZuIfe-uLKhMRkhOJGGsy3HO45AVKInWiT0ExWWG5Kr5aI7qbLmVBf74vZyuVZniJ6Fj8MSBOI08OT0ai4Uy83yzMWnuwGR/s1600/GridDoorMat20x30LLOT9.jpeg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" gu="true" height="296" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjKwaSnmbwJVGhJ7uNBtUIP-ZSv-ok-tP3PcUTTus4z1M_G8wZuIfe-uLKhMRkhOJGGsy3HO45AVKInWiT0ExWWG5Kr5aI7qbLmVBf74vZyuVZniJ6Fj8MSBOI08OT0ai4Uy83yzMWnuwGR/s320/GridDoorMat20x30LLOT9.jpeg" width="320" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="border: medium none; clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiBskYqH5F27Lyvn6EOFxsVNClbFKHSFX271trShiNW46SnqdPKCD2vrEWrEo1kjk47GOOIXM9fxzy25zIui5-AVZNGsCg0vpJokB3XQ9uxqsBb7YjsJuVrDuGF_qMhl93S_P8vQByY6jnh/s1600/GavinDoormatJB10.jpeg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" gu="true" height="297" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiBskYqH5F27Lyvn6EOFxsVNClbFKHSFX271trShiNW46SnqdPKCD2vrEWrEo1kjk47GOOIXM9fxzy25zIui5-AVZNGsCg0vpJokB3XQ9uxqsBb7YjsJuVrDuGF_qMhl93S_P8vQByY6jnh/s320/GavinDoormatJB10.jpeg" width="320" /></a></div><div style="border: medium none; clear: both; text-align: justify;">One of the above doormats. Which one do you like the best? I like the second because it adds a pop of color and my front door is green but then I also like the second but it's timeless - you will never get tired of seeing it. Help!?</div><div style="border: medium none; clear: both; text-align: justify;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="border: medium none; clear: both; text-align: justify;">Here are the pots I was thinking for the plants:</div><div class="separator" style="border: medium none; clear: both; text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="border: medium none; clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiD6zdwMzGu7N2zgAqIiuiiyvafKeXFwaoAeNMPrz8QRWYE1VS6vmtVlKZX_UCiBBT0gZZv3ggQW84H9dArtFR8RzmvyfRbjji_x50SPfJ0QRPPZUmhW3bcaokw71cVsqbqF4C3zv-_S7ur/s1600/Green-BronzeCurvedPotsAB10.jpeg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" gu="true" height="297" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiD6zdwMzGu7N2zgAqIiuiiyvafKeXFwaoAeNMPrz8QRWYE1VS6vmtVlKZX_UCiBBT0gZZv3ggQW84H9dArtFR8RzmvyfRbjji_x50SPfJ0QRPPZUmhW3bcaokw71cVsqbqF4C3zv-_S7ur/s320/Green-BronzeCurvedPotsAB10.jpeg" width="320" /></a></div><div style="border: medium none; clear: both; text-align: justify;">Do you have recommendations for what plants to put in them? I was thinking just two pots, I do love decorating in groups of three but I think three pots would be too much. Is it just me or does the word pot make everyone giggle? hehe. I like the look of the plants they have in the picture, add some more green to the boring deck? I need something hardy, that won't easily die. Also what will the pots look like in winter when the plan dies, should I get year around plants? or just hide the plants in the winter and replace with a blow up, life sized snowman?</div><div style="border: medium none; clear: both; text-align: justify;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="border: medium none; clear: both; text-align: justify;">I also like the look of this planter below. I think the added visual height would be really nice and that the straight lines would match almost too perfectly with the geometric mat above. Too much?</div><div class="separator" style="border: medium none; clear: both; text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="border: medium none; clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg3pdYTyIamjNYXlnfEI3PDdQQ93LV5M5oeKxdD1tt-e4-3A0Qm_KsP8FOpuNxLHBO4Xk_R588XsCnJRUjgTWBYh4xQ8fqnwGKF-78ze5CCMyNJ3e3_Xgupqkgq9q1U1D2z3u9MRk64KlZF/s1600/Four-TierPlantStandBCSC10.jpeg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" gu="true" height="297" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg3pdYTyIamjNYXlnfEI3PDdQQ93LV5M5oeKxdD1tt-e4-3A0Qm_KsP8FOpuNxLHBO4Xk_R588XsCnJRUjgTWBYh4xQ8fqnwGKF-78ze5CCMyNJ3e3_Xgupqkgq9q1U1D2z3u9MRk64KlZF/s320/Four-TierPlantStandBCSC10.jpeg" width="320" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="border: medium none; clear: both; text-align: left;">I can't wait to hear your thoughts and start my front door beautification project! </div>Janinehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05490459139700935904noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9173190871451477776.post-6039801137233348792010-03-13T18:48:00.002-05:002010-10-26T11:15:42.971-04:00Moving on Up...<div style="text-align: justify;">I write this post with mixed feelings as I have a Realtor coming to the condo this afternoon to list it for sale. I know, it has barely been two short years in my cute condo but we have already out grown it. And this move is not because I have updated every room of the condo and am looking for a new one to reno. haha. Definitely, not, although that will be fun. This move is because of this one...</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg5HaQhWqB776cysVHuQC1g6YL8OO8Tq5K5GHpO4GY8eNmP6-ZcV7JPlii6YA5JDCpF-7AU0Sd16JKVfiMTvwZ4CjHTkYm2OB0F8FhiNuX9oQ6XSW8i70OR0R0udvsYItQ_DhWP2ArLm1sO/s1600-h/IMG_0005.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="300" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg5HaQhWqB776cysVHuQC1g6YL8OO8Tq5K5GHpO4GY8eNmP6-ZcV7JPlii6YA5JDCpF-7AU0Sd16JKVfiMTvwZ4CjHTkYm2OB0F8FhiNuX9oQ6XSW8i70OR0R0udvsYItQ_DhWP2ArLm1sO/s400/IMG_0005.JPG" width="400" /></a></div><div style="text-align: justify;">Craig and I adopted Abbey a year ago to this day and while she was 10 lbs when we brought her home, she is now a manly 65 lbs. She loves to run and dig and really does need a fenced in backyard to do those things. We also feel like such bad puppy parents when confining her to a crate for 8+ hours a day during the work week. Although she is the main reason we would like to move to a single family home, there are others, like the joy of a garage and not having to carry 10 bags of groceries up a flight of stairs while it may be raining. It will also be nice to have a third bedroom and not sharing walls with certain neighbors (you all know what I mean). So that is the why, now on to the when, how, where, what...? </div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: justify;">So after talking with the Realtor, it looks like the house will be listed as of Monday. We are hoping that by pricing it aggressively and by all the updates I have done over the last two years, that we can get a quickish (word?) sale. At the same time we hope to buy a single family home in the Cary/Apex area in the next two months. It's going to be a whirlwind, that's for sure.</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: justify;">In getting the house market-ready, I have done a few more updates to the condo that I will be sharing over the week. Those include painting all the kitchen cabinetry, doing quick easy updates to the second bathroom, and a built in closet unit in the second bedroom closet. I also don't think I have ever posted about painting the second bedroom, so I will include before and afters for that room as well. Excited yet?</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: justify;">As I said, there are mixed emotions because I have spent so much of my free time, money, and effort working on this condo that I hate to see it go to a buyer who might ask for more or not appreciate what it use to look like and that they are getting it for practically the same price I did two years ago. (Sorry, long run on there - typing from the heart.) But such is the market and a quick sale in this market is like cold hard cash in better times. Can I post before pictures in all the rooms?? </div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: justify;">Then at the same time, I am beyond excited about the prospect of moving to a bigger home with a great backyard. My first thought was, I want NEW! haha, I am tired of spending all my free time doing reno. However, I just can't resist the temptation to get a great deal on an older home and use the extra cash to make it perfectly me! Plus with older houses you get sooo much more land... goes back to that girly in the picture above. She would love it!! Craig and I are trying not to jump the gun but are already addicted to searching fmrealty.com and zillow. </div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: justify;">Therefore, I am inviting you on our journey to find a new home to love. Expect posts of prospective homes and please give us your feedback. As current homeowners, everyone has their own perspectives that offer ah ha moments for those of us virgins to the single family home lifestyle. Thanks again for reading! <3.</div>Janinehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05490459139700935904noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9173190871451477776.post-30998481519677128122010-01-11T16:47:00.002-05:002010-10-26T11:15:13.622-04:00New Dining Room Light Fixture<div style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;"><div style="text-align: justify;"><span style="font-size: x-small;">I knew before I even closed on my house that the dining room light fixture had to go. Not even centered over the table, not even your grandma would like this style...</span><br />
<span style="font-size: small;"> </span></div></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif; text-align: center;"><span style="font-size: small;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiXzkJH-d0pPiwq364EKXzmhwjTzi2d3J7v9l1-sm637q6acJvGvAddHTc9hvc4yvgvMDviWwxr-AA9xKzfjy4zfRWMoYfveMSsKqmpbByRg0IYMilB0QD_iQ0Bg-QzNzwSmnTZLOjDfyHL/s1600-h/IMG_2285.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiXzkJH-d0pPiwq364EKXzmhwjTzi2d3J7v9l1-sm637q6acJvGvAddHTc9hvc4yvgvMDviWwxr-AA9xKzfjy4zfRWMoYfveMSsKqmpbByRg0IYMilB0QD_iQ0Bg-QzNzwSmnTZLOjDfyHL/s400/IMG_2285.JPG" /></a></span></div><div style="text-align: justify;"><span style="font-size: x-small;"><span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">So, I can't tell you how the sorry little light lasted this long but it did until this past weekend. For the longest time I had been lusting over an extravagant light from Crate and Barrel even so much as to ask for it for Christmas. When I did in fact receive a nice gift card from Janet and my Dad for Christmas, I hurried my little (well bigger thanks to Christmas goodies) butt over to crateandbarrel.com only to discover that they had raised the price another $30! Who does that?!? So rather than fork over the moolah for the light I had been dreaming about for the past year and a half, I decided to look and see what else was on the market that wasn't so high maintenance and full of themselves! Lucky in love, I stumbled upon this light from CB2: <a href="http://www.cb2.com/family.aspx?c=120&f=4773">Eden Pendent Lamp</a>. At nearly 1/4th the price of the original and totally as cute, it was love at first sight! My gift card covered the entire purchase too - happy day!</span></span></div><div style="text-align: justify;"><span style="font-size: x-small;"><br />
</span></div><div style="text-align: justify;"><span style="font-size: x-small;"><span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">The only problem was the light was a plug in not a hardwired to the ceiling mount type. With a little help from my mom, we cut the cord (to my new baby... too far?) and attached the exposed wires to the existing ceiling electrical. I reused the previous ceiling mount by painting it a glossy white to cover the hole in the ceiling. In order to center the light over the table, an hook was installed in the ceiling and the light positioned in perfect place. All in all, it took less than an hour and I wonder why I didn't do it sooner.</span></span><span style="font-size: small;"><span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;"> <br />

And it just so happened they are loving the same lamp I have been lusting after for weeks! These are the lamps that I have been wanting for the bedside tables. I didn't see the candle jars but those are beautiful too and I think would be a really pretty accessory on a dresser. I want to go with hints of gold through out the room, but not King Loey the Third gold everywhere and I think these items are the perfect touch.</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: justify;">My plan is to paint the wall, straight across as you walk in, with 10" horizontal stripes. The same gold tint glaze I used in the bathroom. I am reusing the sidetables from downstairs with a coat of creamy, off white paint and new hardware. I want the overall look to be luxury, glitz but still modern.</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br />

Oh how I love to dream and virtually decorate. Too bad I don't get paid to do that...</div>Janinehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05490459139700935904noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9173190871451477776.post-53038573278933589622009-11-09T19:17:00.002-05:002010-10-26T11:13:57.330-04:00Dreaming: Sidebar & Photography Wall Art<div style="text-align: justify;">So when it comes down to it, I really love composing blog post and especially ones about my lovely home! However, against my wishes, money doesn't grow on trees and this economy has been rough on my job/salary situation. Therefore, I have to take a break from working on my house and save some money for the next project. But rather than take a break from posting I thought I would start a new blog feature, I am calling it "Dreaming." Each week or when the mood strikes me, I will post about interior decorating or home renovations I am dreaming of completing. Because let's face it I really have mentally decorated/renovation every nook of my little home. I know... I am a nerd like that and I like it! :)</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: justify;">Since we last left off in the living room, I thought the first <span style="font-style: italic;">Dreaming</span> post should be about finishing that space. Having just tiled the fireplace surround, purchased a new couch & ottoman, and moved the tv to the fireplace wall, the right side of the room is pretty much bliss. The wall to the left, however, is not, its bare, its nakey actually. So this is my plans for it... </div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: justify;">To start I would love to add a functional but beautiful sidebar/buffet like this one from Overstock.com: </div><div style="text-align: justify;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiqufypBhB-7ps1KXtoyzwmF8c1ioSYX1pciAsWZUrhhRuGwcZnZsYRyfjddWEuounTlyHcuXX7HAYSaUATumxzspK58-jhFsOyF6JFT8FXx2P57mC54KYazwbv7nJazTFd5B9D2hWdn96e/s1600-h/L80001084.jpg" onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}"><img alt="" border="0" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5402186225680681058" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiqufypBhB-7ps1KXtoyzwmF8c1ioSYX1pciAsWZUrhhRuGwcZnZsYRyfjddWEuounTlyHcuXX7HAYSaUATumxzspK58-jhFsOyF6JFT8FXx2P57mC54KYazwbv7nJazTFd5B9D2hWdn96e/s400/L80001084.jpg" style="cursor: pointer; display: block; height: 341px; margin: 0px auto 10px; text-align: center; width: 400px;" /></a>I would keep all of our wine glasses, bar accessories, wine and liquor in this cabinet to free up some space in the kitchen cabinets. It would be nice to serve drinks at this buffet and hors devours on top. Since I don't have a mantel to decorate this Christmas, I would be able to use the top of this buffet as another decorating surface. :)</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: justify;">On the wall above the sidebar, I would pull inspiration from this picture (crate&barrel) below to create a photography feature with six frames.</div><br />
<div style="text-align: justify;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhTh4xPnbCtOFZoqclTdaqHKtlCGkVBv3J10ERLmRSd4F6PgLNVZJzz7gz8L_Qx4RvdzRP94tgGOpLPkAKb2oNy1DkYRiCWCnqohZ0BXce37Ha267suOZD-kqQiCb9doC5NrCa6u0vgfrdR/s1600-h/SpotlightDeskBokaTableSC09.jpg" onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}"><img alt="" border="0" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5402186229293369106" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhTh4xPnbCtOFZoqclTdaqHKtlCGkVBv3J10ERLmRSd4F6PgLNVZJzz7gz8L_Qx4RvdzRP94tgGOpLPkAKb2oNy1DkYRiCWCnqohZ0BXce37Ha267suOZD-kqQiCb9doC5NrCa6u0vgfrdR/s400/SpotlightDeskBokaTableSC09.jpg" style="cursor: pointer; display: block; height: 371px; margin: 0px auto 10px; text-align: center; width: 400px;" /></a>I really like these frames from Target in the 18" x 18" size, we are talking big, drama, so lovely! The frames come in dark espresso wood to match the sidebar with a crisp, white mat to frame a black and white photograph. </div><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjIMSvjXeQfVVlfsHl5Mw1cyxqV0nkM-8B_ZtBIIojMA32ZFdBFNd_b6F8R5QCC_LkJ_UIVLQz9HJNcmCyQDGY4DXej34-5XmqEVzp5kIT2CWPXPQwhokHyY2yn27LIii9l7Ox06Yh8WB2k/s1600-h/51ga7Ej58FL._AA260_.jpg" onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}"><img alt="" border="0" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5402186070551547490" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjIMSvjXeQfVVlfsHl5Mw1cyxqV0nkM-8B_ZtBIIojMA32ZFdBFNd_b6F8R5QCC_LkJ_UIVLQz9HJNcmCyQDGY4DXej34-5XmqEVzp5kIT2CWPXPQwhokHyY2yn27LIii9l7Ox06Yh8WB2k/s400/51ga7Ej58FL._AA260_.jpg" style="cursor: pointer; display: block; height: 260px; margin: 0px auto 10px; text-align: center; width: 260px;" /></a>Here is a side view of the frames in both the espresso color and cherry color:<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj8E2XjTg-2CpLBTMTCgDECg8AzuPd7WakGnzuDobsP8Gll9ystEvAX6orADtwJIY00IYzhwNNPtqW0C92a-maXt54i2yUK1Eom6_h8MULXoEmJmziHgVpZWXGdOM7N9SxY-MEWtOG14OrH/s1600-h/41ffU-FokwL._AA260_.jpg" onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}"><img alt="" border="0" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5402186069798014658" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj8E2XjTg-2CpLBTMTCgDECg8AzuPd7WakGnzuDobsP8Gll9ystEvAX6orADtwJIY00IYzhwNNPtqW0C92a-maXt54i2yUK1Eom6_h8MULXoEmJmziHgVpZWXGdOM7N9SxY-MEWtOG14OrH/s400/41ffU-FokwL._AA260_.jpg" style="cursor: pointer; display: block; height: 260px; margin: 0px auto 10px; text-align: center; width: 260px;" /></a>For the actual photographs, I have a collection of black and white pictures from every city, Craig and I have travel to that would look awesome with a thick 4" white mat border. I would probably get the pictures printed at Kinko's at a 14" x 14" size. Kinko's is much cheaper than say, Shutterfly, and it doesn't matter that the images wouldn't be glossy since there will be glass over the prints. So far, Craig and I have been to</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br />

We have also been to Atlanta and Asheville together but I didn't get a similar picture from those trips. I kind of like the industrial feel of the buildings so leaves wouldn't really cut it. I hope to replace the Wilmington picture with a new trip picture some day too. With those images, I am left with one more available frame... hmm..... where to go? Suggestions?</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br />

I spent last fall requesting tile samples and trying to find the most cost effective and beautiful ones. I also knew that I wanted to eventually remodel the kitchen and include the same tile as a back splash. However, I never really found a tile that grabbed me so the project got put on the back burner. I did find the time to complete minor updates to the wall of the fireplace. Let’s start at the beginning, shall we:</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: justify;">The <span style="font-style: italic;">before</span> in all it’s non-glory:</div><br />
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEit1AApplNnDK4huDAvc5jUURfCz3ssWQyXv-v8nQiNYIwpUDueRUB9b4wh3NiAO1Li2DeReQXZ-7a4ITGy7EuhscidZRzv2B35t6jvvte7VZXoeit_EtiD6DYHsX4-jAiXTayB73QqrqkS/s1600-h/IMG_2270.JPG" onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}"><img alt="" border="0" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5391764468747607842" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEit1AApplNnDK4huDAvc5jUURfCz3ssWQyXv-v8nQiNYIwpUDueRUB9b4wh3NiAO1Li2DeReQXZ-7a4ITGy7EuhscidZRzv2B35t6jvvte7VZXoeit_EtiD6DYHsX4-jAiXTayB73QqrqkS/s400/IMG_2270.JPG" style="cursor: pointer; display: block; height: 300px; margin: 0px auto 10px; text-align: center; width: 400px;" /></a><br />
Before even moving in, my mom, Craig and I primed the entire wall and painted it a rich brown.<br />
<br />

<div style="text-align: justify;">I painted the mantle a fresh glossy white and the dirty carpet was ripped out and replaced with latte laminate flooring. Yummy – I couldn’t resist posting another picture of that beauty:</div><br />

<div style="text-align: justify;">Since the fireplace was actually off center on the wall I used curtains to hide the unevenness (is that really a word?). I hung a copper mirror, bought on clearance from Pier 1, above the mantle. Just doing these little things made me satisfied with the look of the fireplace… for the time being. ;)</div><br />

<div style="text-align: justify;">Right before my housewarming party, I decided to remove the gold glass doors and frame to spray paint it black. I used a special fire resistant paint and covered the glass with painters tape and newspaper, easy peasy. The hard part was reattaching it from the back with a tiny screw drive being the only thing that would fit the space. So in the interest of time – it was two days before my party – I just propped it up and hoped that no one would leaned on it. This method actually worked for the next 6 months until our new ball of energy, Abbey, ran into it one evening and knocked it over. This was the spark (sorry, last fireplace related pun) I needed to start the tile project!</div><div style="text-align: justify;"></div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: justify;">I really wish I had taken pictures while working on the fireplace, it would make it much easier to visualize these next steps. After removing the ugly gold frame doors, I was left with a big hole and much of the fireplace supports showing. Therefore, I could not simply tile over just the wood surround. I removed the wood pieces and measured how big my new backing would need to be. I then used an utility blade to cut cement board down to size and screwed it in to the remaining surrounds with cement screws. This process was actually a lot easier than I had anticipated. Next was applying a layer of thin-set mortar and placing the glass tiles on top. I ended up finding the glass tiles at Home Depot for the price of $4.99 a sq ft. Not bad at all for glass tiles this pretty! I actually lucked out and the tiles fit perfectly without having to cut any in half. The tiles come in 12 x 12” sections with mesh backing, so it really didn’t take that long to tile the whole surround. After waiting 24 hours for the thin-set mortar to fix, I then grouted with white, pre-mixed grout. I wiped off any excess grout from the glass tiles and left for drying. Unfortunately, I didn’t remove enough of the grout residue from the tiles so when it completely dried a film of grout remained. I need to really go in and scrub the tiles to make them really shine, but in interest in time and showing the after pictures, here they are:</div><br />

<div style="text-align: justify;">It is hard to get a great shot without the glare from the television and one that really shows the detail of the glass tiles. So that’s the best view you’re going to get, unless you visit of course! :) We ended up mounting the TV above the fireplace, as much as my undeclared interior designer self cringed, it really is the best place for centering the room and making use of the wide space. I also took down the mantle because one: it was much to high to begin with and two: I like the visual clean appearance of the wall without it. Still debating if I will put some sort of mantle back up, I do love decorating it for the holidays. </div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br />

<div style="text-align: justify;">And last but not least, a picture of Abbey & Lexi enjoying the new couch: Love them! I love how my living room turned out, it is so cozy and comfortable. The new couch is from Rooms to Go and something Craig and I both picked out, I like the form and Craig the function (a perfect match of function & form). :) With the new couch, we can now seat up to 7 people comfortable so who is in for movie night?!</div><br />

I bet you didn’t believe I would post again until February. ;) My second remodel for this week is the master bedroom closet. When I bought the house I still wasn’t completely sold on the master closet. I thought it was way too small and it barely qualified for a walk in. In fact, I didn’t even keep my clothes in this closet for the first year of living here because it was too dirty and dysfunctional. There was only one bar in the main section and gross markings all over the left wall as you walked in. Here is a before shot:</div><br />
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjNm3n6zcbisY1CC8T3mlWrmZIS3K9l-UD0aY3Q3EoOkvhzyuI50pZU2z2frRU6x4AIA1uFvwV1mEBzlp6xxAw3G0QzxzeR7J3Bk7PMzeHZN4Zyg_tjt7fJebHTjm5gUULuLrflGkOC4-el/s1600-h/IMG_2282.JPG" onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}"><img alt="" border="0" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5389511117113095410" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjNm3n6zcbisY1CC8T3mlWrmZIS3K9l-UD0aY3Q3EoOkvhzyuI50pZU2z2frRU6x4AIA1uFvwV1mEBzlp6xxAw3G0QzxzeR7J3Bk7PMzeHZN4Zyg_tjt7fJebHTjm5gUULuLrflGkOC4-el/s400/IMG_2282.JPG" style="cursor: pointer; display: block; height: 400px; margin: 0px auto 10px; text-align: center; width: 300px;" /></a><br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">… not cute and definitely not well designed for maximizing clothes storage. In mid July, like most projects, I started by ripping everything out, patching all the holes, and cleaning the walls. Some of the nails from the ceiling were coming out, as is normal in older homes, so I also fixed those and scraped off all the popcorn on the ceiling. (Yes, the only 3 rooms in my house that have smooth ceilings are the bathrooms and my closet, weird, I know). One day I would like to remove the popcorn from the rest of the house, but that is something I will leave to the professionals. The ceiling also has an opening that allows access to the attic - the trim and door for that were unpainted wood, so I spruced them and the ceiling up with two coats of ceiling paint. </div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: justify;">The walls were then painted the well known, Behr Gobi Desert. I debated about painting a fresh pop of color in the closet to contrast the subtle color in the bedroom, but after rethinking I determined it’s just a closet and a neutral color would be better for resale. After all the prep work, a trip to IKEA was calling my name!</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: justify;">On an early Sunday morning, my mom, younger sister, Kristin, and I piled into my little Civic for the drive to IKEA Charlotte. Three hours in the car, three in the store and we were standing in the parking lot trying to figure out Civic Tetris. With the IKEA employees doubting us, we crammed three closet units, all the interior components, Kristin’s new desk, dresser, and desk chair all into my little car. (side note: this is not the first time I have crammed more stuff into my car than previously thought possible.) Four hours later we were home (had to drive super slow thanks to the small bedroom weighing down my car). After Craig’s help carrying each box inside, I took Monday off work to construct all the components. Despite the IKEA picture instructions warning me not to build it without two people, I finished in one long day. I did fall off the ladder once and almost get squashed by a huge closet unit, but it’s all worth it in the end, right? Take a looksie: </div><br />
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjXBmT838LyeGx6gL1gYUhEAUoYI-pszvf1Q-5zOoWgzyO2KAZJhfl0KVmQfvq-je49oY5vmv1lk9X0UmoNgrps6uv6LFKUMao_eWnxWXEi13x9cJXBC8winFRqDm-Q2ThhVboqvmhyphenhyphenwiei/s1600-h/IMG_1841.JPG" onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}"><img alt="" border="0" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5389510984478664098" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjXBmT838LyeGx6gL1gYUhEAUoYI-pszvf1Q-5zOoWgzyO2KAZJhfl0KVmQfvq-je49oY5vmv1lk9X0UmoNgrps6uv6LFKUMao_eWnxWXEi13x9cJXBC8winFRqDm-Q2ThhVboqvmhyphenhyphenwiei/s400/IMG_1841.JPG" style="cursor: pointer; display: block; height: 400px; margin: 0px auto 10px; text-align: center; width: 267px;" /></a><br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">Note: It’s hard to get one good photo of the entire closet due to its size. So I will just post pictures of different angles and features. As you can see in the above picture, there is a closet inside the closet. The second closet just houses the heat pump so it really is unusable space. I really had to maximize all the closet to fit all of our clothes. Lucky for us, we don’t own a lot of clothes and I don’t have a shoe or purse fetish, just a love for a well organized space. Sigh… :) </div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: justify;">This is Craig’s section on the left:</div><br />
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh9ax0XPJbzmnqYvRdjWzHWBvW6kbSkWtkPI5mvmBv9rAfw8XuZ-UkkJIIXINMeHnSqXEUh3M_FYcT9JQttmhBK4Z01QYsWUYnarQ_XbmND7YtpYt-QqoNVtwyGDdhyphenhyphen_W8DWEg-hP-jFhWu/s1600-h/IMG_1844.JPG" onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}"><img alt="" border="0" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5389510888861428418" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh9ax0XPJbzmnqYvRdjWzHWBvW6kbSkWtkPI5mvmBv9rAfw8XuZ-UkkJIIXINMeHnSqXEUh3M_FYcT9JQttmhBK4Z01QYsWUYnarQ_XbmND7YtpYt-QqoNVtwyGDdhyphenhyphen_W8DWEg-hP-jFhWu/s400/IMG_1844.JPG" style="cursor: pointer; display: block; height: 400px; margin: 0px auto 10px; text-align: center; width: 267px;" /></a><br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">I have two sections of the closet which are organized by work clothes and then weekend clothes. I then organize my shirts and pants by color (light to dark) to making finding a particular shirt easier and it makes it pretty. This is the best picture I could get of my side:</div><br />
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhMlRrjLuaeS7UR8qPh8FCPznKRlouWWEP44N_918CA8QrFSwq8aHL5rhsd6yC7Xqii3a0Pb0vZ4uwSAC93-ZqzEemuXQbbWFjucyULVovwD__j8b124yTY_DdmlA9uiJANrPhfXaLCEaI-/s1600-h/IMG_1849.JPG" onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}"><img alt="" border="0" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5389510767987438482" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhMlRrjLuaeS7UR8qPh8FCPznKRlouWWEP44N_918CA8QrFSwq8aHL5rhsd6yC7Xqii3a0Pb0vZ4uwSAC93-ZqzEemuXQbbWFjucyULVovwD__j8b124yTY_DdmlA9uiJANrPhfXaLCEaI-/s400/IMG_1849.JPG" style="cursor: pointer; display: block; height: 400px; margin: 0px auto 10px; text-align: center; width: 267px;" /></a><br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">Let’s start from the top, above each section is a canvas box for storing out of season clothes. You can also see the “door” to the attic and the new light fixture. I really wanted to hang a fancy chandelier in here but decided my budget was more important in this situation, so I went with a left over $8 fixture from updating the hallway lights.</div><br />
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg8RSKM9eYYTuqaDOyNzaEyZ8SBFcl4CbpMGf_gQye5zLCjVtWsBkKMetCtf_utuuTpXSYzlAsghlmlsBu35kZ6fuFOR1zM-uBrxS3HdSK5KRu2SrAQGbMTPXUZxwqJg5pZV59pTQ7LRSvo/s1600-h/IMG_1872.JPG" onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}"><img alt="" border="0" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5389510670153169458" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg8RSKM9eYYTuqaDOyNzaEyZ8SBFcl4CbpMGf_gQye5zLCjVtWsBkKMetCtf_utuuTpXSYzlAsghlmlsBu35kZ6fuFOR1zM-uBrxS3HdSK5KRu2SrAQGbMTPXUZxwqJg5pZV59pTQ7LRSvo/s400/IMG_1872.JPG" style="cursor: pointer; display: block; height: 267px; margin: 0px auto 10px; text-align: center; width: 400px;" /></a><br />
<div style="text-align: justify;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: justify;">The top most portion of each unit is storage for purses or hats, etc. Eventually, I would like to get baskets to put the purses in so that it’s easier to reach. Currently, I have to get Craig to reach anything on the top section, hence why I have been using the same purse for the last two months. </div><br />

<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">The next section is shirts, oh my! Craig’s side will eventually have a pull out on one side for ties and belts. Unfortunately, IKEA stopped making the metal tie/belt holder I liked and now just has a cheap plastic type. All of the hangers are light wooden hangers to give a cohesive look and because they tend to leave less hanger dents on shirts.</div><br />

<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">My work pants section has a pull out rack that allows easier access to the pants. The remaining pant sections just have bars and pant hangers.</div><br />

<div style="text-align: justify;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: justify;">Just above my work pant section, I am going to add a jewelry/ belt organizer the next time I get to IKEA. I previously had my eyes set on a wooden jewelry organizer which of course they discontinued, so I needed some time to decide if I liked the new version. I think I do… thoughts?</div><br />

<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">Last, but not least, shoes! I know this will come as a shocker, but I really don’t have very many shoes. So the two racks per unit are just fine for me. Eventually, I might steal Craig’s second rack because he only owns two pairs of shoes for work, black and brown. He really doesn’t see the need to have any others. Hehe. We store our tennis shoes and sandals in the downstairs closet.</div><br />

So, do you like it?? Lexi does!<br />

<div style="text-align: justify;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: justify;">You might be wondering were I hang my dresses, no? Don’t care? Too bad, I am going to tell ya. Unfortunately, I just couldn’t figure out a way to store my dresses in the closet because you need a long section. I did think about kicking Craig out all together and using his section for dresses, but in reality I only have 5 or so dresses and I really only wear them 5 or so times a year. So I keep my dresses and dress shoes in the second bedroom closet along with Craig’s and my suits. We wear them so infrequently that we don’t mind going into the other room to get them. </div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: justify;">Wow, that was a long post! Sorry, I just wasted 10 mins of your life reading this. ;) Come visit and you can see the closet in person, it’s much better that way!</div>Janinehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05490459139700935904noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9173190871451477776.post-88861146532550442482009-10-04T10:36:00.026-04:002010-10-26T11:10:07.180-04:00So Fresh & So Clean: Laundry Room<div style="text-align: justify;">Wow, it has been a while, hasn't it? Sorry for the delay in postings, it's not like I didn't have great things to post. So to catch you all up, I have decided to do three posts this week! Three, yes, three! I haven't posted once in 8 months, but now I am back on the ball and posting three in one week. Wahoo! A lot has happened since I last posted, Craig and I adopted a cute little puppy who is now an energetic 50lb dog. My good friend, Jen, got married on a beautiful Sunday in June and I created her wedding invitations and most of the paper goods for the wedding. I have been working on starting my own correspondence & design business (more on this next week). I cleared and renovated the laundry room, the master bedroom closet, and completely fancified the fireplace with glass tile. So in keeping with the timeline of the updates, let's start with the laundry room, which I completed in early March.</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: justify;">For comparisons, here are some before pictures... gross!</div><br />
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj4JjAfXacGkQDhU8NgTRYb4sr_EvZsXQ9hBAZY1vIaldWyTFBD0qWlWQbecs8C0TPi7XIbGGtItF9t6Au5uICqZvWytZX8sJUFbLtpIKra4KHfPrlvri35O8FHBdoLelsCkKSMVhb6aHVq/s1600-h/IMG_0585.JPG" onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}"><img alt="" border="0" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5389150249826220146" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj4JjAfXacGkQDhU8NgTRYb4sr_EvZsXQ9hBAZY1vIaldWyTFBD0qWlWQbecs8C0TPi7XIbGGtItF9t6Au5uICqZvWytZX8sJUFbLtpIKra4KHfPrlvri35O8FHBdoLelsCkKSMVhb6aHVq/s400/IMG_0585.JPG" style="cursor: pointer; display: block; height: 400px; margin: 0px auto 10px; text-align: center; width: 267px;" /></a><br />

<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">In late February, my 'old timer' washing machine (which came with the house) decided to break and cost a small fortunate to fix. So rather than fix something I disliked in the first place and with a little help from a hefty tax return, I bought a brand new front loader washer and dryer!</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: justify;">The weekend before the new washer & dryer were to be delivered, I removed everything from the laundry room, its more like a closet however. ;) It was so gross since the previous owners had never cleaned it. I painted a fresh coat of Gobi Desert, leftover from painting the rest of the house. I also went ahead and placed new laminate tile (same as in the master bathroom) over the old flooring. Gave the doors and trim a fresh coat of white paint and switched out the old flowery door knobs for sleek brushed nickel ones.</div><br />

<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">Okay, okay... I think you have waited enough, a whole 8 months and now I am making you read all this fluff before I show the big reveal. I figured with a laundry room, I would have to hype it up... it's just a laundry closet after all.</div><br />
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEifnPe1itZtZaBFMMeWZ4I5AGn0PJxDIaYh4l35cdPCJd5Ai77IEHjK3TkH-93hRo8D0Z0tAaT9ggBiCFszVY916YhQvngQrioK_RNoKjzOuGCibsuU-ResNTOLhObtF_HKR1l4hzfyHyuI/s1600-h/IMG_1786.JPG" onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}"><img alt="" border="0" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5389150075459507954" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEifnPe1itZtZaBFMMeWZ4I5AGn0PJxDIaYh4l35cdPCJd5Ai77IEHjK3TkH-93hRo8D0Z0tAaT9ggBiCFszVY916YhQvngQrioK_RNoKjzOuGCibsuU-ResNTOLhObtF_HKR1l4hzfyHyuI/s400/IMG_1786.JPG" style="cursor: pointer; display: block; height: 400px; margin: 0px auto 10px; text-align: center; width: 267px;" /></a><br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">Isn't she a beaut! Having a laundry room this lovely and organized really makes me happy to do the laundry, ironing is now just mildly mundane. For ironing and folding, I created a table top over the washer & dryer by cutting a piece of plywood down to size, painting it white, and then applying a coat of clear polyurethane so water wouldn't damage the surface. For some reason, the polyurethane coating has yellowed a bit over time. Eventually, I might replace it with a white laminate countertop from IKEA. I used a silver bucket as a trash can and also to collect the drops from the laundry detergent. I framed two art cards to add visual interest and color to the room and to also hide the cords and water valves.</div><br />

<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">The shelving, drying rack, iron holder, and storage bins all came from IKEA. I do most of the ironing in this small space so to add much needed light, I installed two arm lamps (also from IKEA).</div><br />

</div><div style="text-align: justify;">So there you have it, the first of many new posts to come. Please check back on Tuesday for another post on the new master bedroom closet which was completed in July. <div style="text-align: justify;">To celebrate buying a home and all the work that has gone into making it my home, I hosted a housewarming party for all my friends and family. The theme was a Gingerbread House warming party complete with a Christmas tree, warm & spiked apple cider, festive music, and of course a cute little gingerbread house & cookies. Loved ones started arriving shortly before 8pm and after touring the house, the good conversation & fun lasted all the way to midnight! It was great to see everyone, to share my new home and to show off the updates I have made to the house. I received many sweet compliments and a thoughtful card signed by everyone that attended. :) Despite all the preparation and last minute stress, I had the best time and would gladly host another party soon.... hmm. Thanks again to all those who could make it and to those who couldn't or those that live out of state, please come visit!! </div><div style="text-align: center;"><br />

This project was the biggest and hardest that I have taken on in my new place, or well ever for that matter! It took well over a month to complete and still needs some minor finishing. I started by scraping off the popcorn ceiling, ripping out the old, broken vanity and tearing up the three previous vinyl flooring sheets. Yes, three, there were three old flooring vinyl layers each one more ugly than the previous. Once all the old was out the bathroom looked quite bare. I wish I had been able to take pictures of the blank slate I had to work with to better show you all that was done to it, but unfortunately my camera was still missing.</div><div style="text-align: center;"><img alt="" border="0" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5289808105135148962" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiDoTCp1M5XDuJXtjw_VRvzeDGyjfSpeONu-MVghBHxGta0Auvrp_UdfkY_7QWILqB9YVTqe-UfLsJ648T_6Vwqu0Yu1XCTKDbYjarB32rwbrlGpDrvsBGdt3m0kvqIFgFbdDyeEFOGq9N8/s320/IMG_0512.JPG" style="cursor: pointer; height: 320px; width: 214px;" /></div><div style="text-align: justify;">The next weekend was spent spackling<i></i> and priming the ceiling as well as priming all the walls to really have a blank canvas to work with. Craig and I then painted the entire bathroom the same Adriatic Mist color that was leftover from my bedroom. I gave that coat of paint a week to completely dry and harden before taping 8" vertical stripes around the room. The next step was to paint every other stripe a translucent iridescent glaze in a golden glow. Since it was a glaze, the paint had a much longer drying time and required me to wait another week before painting the second coat it required.</div><div style="text-align: center;"><img alt="" border="0" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5289808117834861106" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi0pveiJWx3l2i1_3Iq4y4hT2W-_Un6CkWgocyNZnIjEz1c96VBRyncshNelCukaf1g1ze_GjyHfI75URkkWt_LD0x5rHt3HZmUYtgguqksFQVq1MAWO38nfNJX4hUrdpmw54RgwbTvZ_S5/s320/IMG_0540.JPG" style="cursor: pointer; height: 320px; width: 214px;" /><img alt="" border="0" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5289848033675964082" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEguVfMoG8Gxsnad8TAUbz_YEzHILMrvDr7xalrR2wQ5An4KKPHMVimBEgyG3ZjLT3aCEpO1ol70kZCAPsZCrRX0ROZkNuFoNwUKWq-uTfpZJWVW4mnGWk5c4h1gV8lAS-0-pth_FQPOuQTU/s320/IMG_0513.JPG" style="cursor: pointer; height: 214px; width: 320px;" /></div><div style="text-align: justify;">While waiting for the stripes to dry completely, my mom and I installed 12" x 12" laminate tiles over the plywood subflooring. The tiling we used was Cryntel Italia Stone Bianco Vinyl Tile purchased at Lowe's Hardware for $1 a tile. So for about $30, the entire bathroom received brand new flooring that looks almost identical to stone tiles. The tile was a peel and stick type making it very easy to install. We installed it in a subway tile effect placing every other row half a tile off from the next. See the picture below... It was very easy to cut the tiles to size by using an exacto knife and creating templates for awkward spaces, like around the toilet.</div><div style="text-align: center;"><img alt="" border="0" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5289808071261324386" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjNqqNXLyXFB6YI7CtK4g6D0LkPcRxYGQZmashx7bs6IqahbrkAwp3TNEVhjnLIZTyBlif842JrsJr3plNiaKefe26Od3lOkUnaOWtpMUCvDUG8NPXX0SVQ4n_gtk3lBuf4X4CqMCqoZUGc/s320/IMG_0520A.jpg" style="cursor: pointer; height: 214px; width: 320px;" /></div><div style="text-align: left;">Once all the flooring was installed and a second coat of glaze applied to the vertical stripes it was time to install the vanity! I found the new vanity on clearance at Lowe's for $200 when it originally was $499! Nothing was wrong or broken on this vanity, the style and color was just being discontinued. Lucky for me, it was exactly the style I had been envisioning for the new space. The only draw back of the vanity was that it was built to hold a two sink countertop and the top two drawers were dummy drawers. I originally had planned to reuse my one sink countertop. In order to create two additional functioning drawers, I measured, cut and built two drawers to fit the vanity. I purchased 4 pullout makeup organization trays at IKEA and retrofit them under the sink area. Lastly, I installed new hardware to the door fronts to replace two of the knobs. I think the curve of the new hardware is a great complement to the curve in the new light fixture in the bathroom. Finally, Craig and I maneuvered the vanity into place and secured it by using five screws into the wall studs. </div><div style="text-align: center;"><img alt="" border="0" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5289808092964148386" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh-zSa5oI567fyE72dO4C0Y92zBIQsC7KwkZSLvHhZDOBf6T2eF_uiJBf4uEKbP36Pb0Lfe1uu3Pau_fkcEFdOLO6rP1EvPXkl2nUsvI1Qivlh6ktE7uogfIT1J3et9Op1r7Su0PTK2XKrf/s320/IMG_0491.JPG" style="cursor: pointer; height: 320px; width: 214px;" /></div><div style="text-align: justify;">I should have seen this next thing coming, knowing my experience with thinking a project is easy and then finding out how challenging little things are with this house. Of course the old vanity was 58" long and the new vanity 60" and therefore the old countertop 2" short... how did I not see this coming! Unfortunately as much as I could brainstorm cheap and creative solutions, it was just ultimately easier to buy a new countertop that fit perfectly. So off to Home Depot we went and then in the new countertop went. The finishing touches were installing a new light fixture (matches the one downstairs), the brush nickel faucet, and matching bathroom hardware. </div><div style="text-align: center;"><img alt="" border="0" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5289798739708603586" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgv_VJ1QGYseNoEiYPEuT4fhM7bpJP_b0Y7rdMNVBD4xJe9_NUQ70eYqQygeXoG-1p005OwfalDILdRL1BCxFIjBpID_K1Y_7XcIsSoCxLLKyAOG9bdBektS72r_sHrIJ1s4ZfY7vDjwhI5/s320/IMG_0525.JPG" style="cursor: pointer; height: 320px; width: 214px;" /><img alt="" border="0" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5289798728720616850" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgnOcsJbQbQRA6d-wGv_GF3Y_rmiDym7nEGyIp7kt47hjeNHgFuSoGV16GOTVwoLmvFN2pCiuaF8kwqzkGe2jlDnF-cRAbMC48pPz9SD8DwczTA1gj1gy8bv6nu53YglM3YuSjtgr1O_IqB/s320/IMG_0511.JPG" style="cursor: pointer; height: 320px; width: 214px;" /><img alt="" border="0" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5289798730496255922" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgzIdtHthze09Rr_kNoh00WYDKIxTcveYrCXJpZKSlb3wzIZoEaWOme-8QsFmhwi4XktSBoihyphenhyphenvCwOV9xWIky03WdDsKm-YZdD54kJH1e12MHMn2ki5FhfCa9JojRshmED1t-m0sfVMLENs/s320/IMG_0510.JPG" style="cursor: pointer; height: 214px; width: 320px;" /></div><div style="text-align: justify;">The trim around the vanity was cut back and new corner round cut to size and installed. Each of those received a fresh coat of white trim paint as well as the door. The door was also updated with a brush nickel doorknob. I am currently working on renovating the master bathroom. The biggest project yet! Hence the lapse in blog postings. So far, the old broken vanity has been ripped out, popcorn ceiling removed, and the old peeling vinyl flooring ripped up. Demo was fun until I had to clean it up all up. After cleaning the room, the ceiling received a fresh coat of white paint and the walls the same Adriatic Mist paint from the bedroom. Last weekend, my mom and I installed new laminate floor tiles that look almost real but cost nothing near. Currently I am in the process of painting vertical stripes on the walls to add to the luxurious feel. No pictures to post as of yet, since my camera was lost somehow at the NC State game. I hope to borrow a camera in the next few weeks to take pictures and show off the fab work! So I will continue to spend all my free time in the bathroom in hopes of posting results soon!</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: justify;">p.s. I also would like to give dap to Craig for all his hard work & great disposition while helping me with this project! :)</div>Janinehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05490459139700935904noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9173190871451477776.post-26431650806533880252008-10-16T21:09:00.023-04:002010-10-26T11:03:06.212-04:00Half Bath... <div style="text-align: justify;">I am happy to write that the downstairs half bathroom is finally finished! After one coat of primer, two coats of an awful traffic cone orange color, two more coats of a deeper red paint, then another coat of primer, and finally two coats of chocolate brown, I am ecstatic to say that I will not be painting this bathroom ever again!! :) A lot has changed in this small space so I am posting the before and after pictures for comparisons. Below is the vanity with a fresh coat of white paint, new hardware, and a new fixture. I also switched out the towel bar with a small towel ring, replaced the dated light fixture, and installed a new mirror with a white border.</div></div><div style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj5uTuAlsu1Wlk1qWsOC3zOb9oSyPa3ZxaFz0Vfg3mnhBow2Oe9nDByOjUoIdAxH20T24vVnKC5nn45Ip1lFwmjxXWGz2KMzpV74FWQeMQxNAE8uJXBKTif4LFtnOmJTyGXQfsJtwAqfroH/s1600-h/IMG_2293.JPG" onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}"><img alt="" border="0" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5285968830272702850" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj5uTuAlsu1Wlk1qWsOC3zOb9oSyPa3ZxaFz0Vfg3mnhBow2Oe9nDByOjUoIdAxH20T24vVnKC5nn45Ip1lFwmjxXWGz2KMzpV74FWQeMQxNAE8uJXBKTif4LFtnOmJTyGXQfsJtwAqfroH/s320/IMG_2293.JPG" style="cursor: pointer; height: 320px; width: 240px;" /></a><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj5RUmqxRYiF3cBxJ9C7kY0OgrX6yk3iUr26auNxSv1Blol6nm0BvNtsmLMB7Jh39kkGB_eVoxWMCC4h0FB9A4qkhO1jNVXnQAeScZ0NCGLOBLjZSrzrcnWd7EYjErg2GBbbzqLL6FGa_8O/s1600-h/IMG_0003.JPG" onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}"><img alt="" border="0" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5285968837229644994" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj5RUmqxRYiF3cBxJ9C7kY0OgrX6yk3iUr26auNxSv1Blol6nm0BvNtsmLMB7Jh39kkGB_eVoxWMCC4h0FB9A4qkhO1jNVXnQAeScZ0NCGLOBLjZSrzrcnWd7EYjErg2GBbbzqLL6FGa_8O/s320/IMG_0003.JPG" style="cursor: pointer; height: 320px; width: 240px;" /></a></div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">On the opposite wall a casual picture frame featuring red coral and tan graphic designs was hung above the toilet. I also updated the toilet paper holder to match the new towel ring and the satin nickel of the sink faucet. Of course, one could not forget the beautiful and rich laminate hardware flooring that makes a huge difference in the small room. The door and trim received a fresh coat of paint and an updated satin nickel doorknob.</div></div><div style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiN1uL7eEH21-6NOEdiOs_QgHWnHxxlI1UyEihyDiBYARcBtTmdPXoy3AXK-d79MYxJHUuvUeskJApkxWby_wYY8oNsNgS52Zw3N-cUvKiA80voVAKkx6cAT6Dxbmpf_WkWI3TOkOzHfIvL/s1600-h/IMG_2295.JPG" onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}"><img alt="" border="0" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5285971835603512274" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiN1uL7eEH21-6NOEdiOs_QgHWnHxxlI1UyEihyDiBYARcBtTmdPXoy3AXK-d79MYxJHUuvUeskJApkxWby_wYY8oNsNgS52Zw3N-cUvKiA80voVAKkx6cAT6Dxbmpf_WkWI3TOkOzHfIvL/s320/IMG_2295.JPG" style="cursor: pointer; height: 240px; width: 320px;" /></a><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEheRXZVMWF_0LrmvafUMIkFD9muq5PnUfYV7zYK7PeOSIHmSplrGmdODpCjkIuWOSledS6WuIWFvYAmoQnbQaXMz6KH0jVuhriRYFtC8BoMorfQ9nRuZhyiv62C0Ay53lbyzRKMRvmDGmT9/s1600-h/IMG_0005A.jpg" onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}"><img alt="" border="0" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5285971844599815826" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEheRXZVMWF_0LrmvafUMIkFD9muq5PnUfYV7zYK7PeOSIHmSplrGmdODpCjkIuWOSledS6WuIWFvYAmoQnbQaXMz6KH0jVuhriRYFtC8BoMorfQ9nRuZhyiv62C0Ay53lbyzRKMRvmDGmT9/s320/IMG_0005A.jpg" style="height: 320px; width: 240px;" /></a></div><div style="text-align: center;"><br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">Last but certainly not least... I took the time to scrape off the old popcorn ceiling, putty and sand the surface smooth before applying a fresh coat of paint. I don't have a before picture of this but I am sure everyone knows a popcorn ceiling when they see one and they won't see it in the half bathroom. Now for the rest of my house... that's a different story and likely to not change because removing popcorn is hard and dirty work! I am really excited about the transformation in this small bathroom and I think it feels really cozy yet contemporary. Many where afraid the dark color on the wall would make the space feel like a cave and fortunately it does not! Many visitors will also be happy to know that the door is back in place for their privacy. Overall this project took much longer and much more paint that originally expected but the end result is always worth the work. At least that is my perspective. ;)</div><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhwAQoCv5ZDEBtM0qtA7gyRdV6_V_KmsGpDhn-8LUx6XrOTnWvyyaUe8TuxjDfVWvhQEP5ffkZJ7wntx26s-qFb3MO6ozjK2sNB3JjMJBP6I1vtWln4P1JxdxKqa15bFCZluubDtPTcdtP0/s1600-h/IMG_0012.jpg" onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}"><img alt="" border="0" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5285973036575632562" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhwAQoCv5ZDEBtM0qtA7gyRdV6_V_KmsGpDhn-8LUx6XrOTnWvyyaUe8TuxjDfVWvhQEP5ffkZJ7wntx26s-qFb3MO6ozjK2sNB3JjMJBP6I1vtWln4P1JxdxKqa15bFCZluubDtPTcdtP0/s320/IMG_0012.jpg" style="cursor: pointer; height: 320px; width: 240px;" /></a></div>Janinehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05490459139700935904noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9173190871451477776.post-79237023467929675652008-09-25T19:28:00.015-04:002010-10-26T11:02:29.201-04:00The Dining Room Rug is Here to Stay!<div style="text-align: center;"><div style="text-align: left;">Just wanted to post another picture of the dining room: <br />

</div><div style="text-align: justify;">I have framed two pictures with custom dark brown picture mats (handmade by yours truly, of course... wasn't about to pay $35 for just one mat!) the pictures are of Craig & I and of my fab girlies Betsy, Carrie, and I. I will hang two additional pictures above the desk to make the long wall symmetrical. Still deciding on the particular pictures but I know I want great pics of my family and other loves!</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: justify;">Oh and "Papa don't preach... but, I've made up my mind... I'm keeeeping the ruuugg!" ;) wow, so corny. But I do love the rug - it's so soft and works just perfectly in the space. yay! Props to my beautiful Mom on that one. </div>Janinehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05490459139700935904noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9173190871451477776.post-50834359677733725442008-09-21T21:39:00.006-04:002010-10-26T10:52:59.189-04:00Dining Room Rug with Green?<div style="text-align: center;"><div style="text-align: justify;">So, I have decided that the dining room needs an area rug to define the space from the rest of the living room and the desk area. On a Lowe's Hardware trip with my mom, we found a great rug on sale for half off! I love the rug and it's the perfect size; I am just not sure the green in the rug or the modern curves match with the rest of the living room. A picture is posted below, comments appreciated! :)</div><br />

Many thanks to her for getting me a sweet employee discount on the Levolor (a Rubbermaid company) ;) blinds pictured to the left. Before, the kitchen was like a 24 hour human exhibit tank with me as the main attraction whenever I was in it. However, the custom blinds came today and with my Mom's help we installed them to my delight! Paired with the cute bar table and chairs from IKEA the breakfast nook is ready for it's first Saturday morning pancakes. I also must give shout outs to Craig for helping assemble the table... they don't make constructing these things easy!! It all looks great though and I can't wait to enjoy the view of the trees over the top of the blinds and a cup of coffee at the table with no outside spectators. :) happiness.</div>Janinehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05490459139700935904noreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9173190871451477776.post-78033419234836185772008-07-30T08:33:00.006-04:002010-10-26T10:59:58.374-04:00Loving my Living Room<div style="text-align: justify;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiv3uR_6A0OeNDJuM957sl6WtE2R3G6a_NVmCZkYBFuK8hHEKg8mDUay0IypXB2LJ0iBpjB6yTaE_T4G62-2ryTM1nTo1gLKWoHpOwRSf29HAKEyyly6HMI1bp2HAQNogEwvIRxECpB7ug0/s1600-h/IMG_2415.jpg" onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}"><img alt="" border="0" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5242536379866909698" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiv3uR_6A0OeNDJuM957sl6WtE2R3G6a_NVmCZkYBFuK8hHEKg8mDUay0IypXB2LJ0iBpjB6yTaE_T4G62-2ryTM1nTo1gLKWoHpOwRSf29HAKEyyly6HMI1bp2HAQNogEwvIRxECpB7ug0/s400/IMG_2415.jpg" style="cursor: pointer; display: block; margin: 0px auto 10px; text-align: center;" /></a>I know it has been a while since I have posted on my blog. I have just been busy busy cleaning, painting, and putting away things at my new place. Now after a full month of living at my first place, I am happy to post some progress! I have made my first mortgage and HOA payments...yay.... sorta. ;) Many payments to go, but yet the place already feels all my own. I have worked almost solely on my living room this month to get it looking how I want it. That way, even if the rest of the house is a hazard zone, I can still relax in my living room. Let me know what you think and any design suggestions or tips are welcomed!</div><br />

<div style="text-align: justify;">My place is finally starting to look better. They always say that things have to look worse before they look better and that's definitely true for our work. <div style="text-align: justify;">Saturday was a long work day for my mom, Craig, and I. We started at 10:30 that morning and didn't stop until after 6pm. Although it was a long and tiring day, so much was done and you can really see all the transformations taking shape. I couldn't have done it without their help, so I am very grateful that Craig and my mom devoted their day to helping me. :) We put on some music, made jokes about Gobi Desert, Balmy Seas, and who is the lucky one that gets to name the paints, and the next thing we knew it was already 6pm.</div><div style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhJWBO0P5FIshNcX6xkFw6N8C0MW-N0ehFDfpIvaSOp7ELVvxGwN3g4vaFsOyOmAL9EpXf_MPZz_bFbFj_Gaw1EWf2pTd7vdT0YYjLrE125FLKju98LTa5saNmmw0mq2ScLzM1-QwWwFcGB/s1600-h/IMG_2311.JPG" onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}"><img alt="" border="0" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5285701448347250850" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhJWBO0P5FIshNcX6xkFw6N8C0MW-N0ehFDfpIvaSOp7ELVvxGwN3g4vaFsOyOmAL9EpXf_MPZz_bFbFj_Gaw1EWf2pTd7vdT0YYjLrE125FLKju98LTa5saNmmw0mq2ScLzM1-QwWwFcGB/s320/IMG_2311.JPG" style="cursor: pointer; height: 240px; width: 320px;" /></a><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjotG5lDE-713rLJkyI1NzCSN6eGEhyphenhyphen-vkrZk9R_qCxvkjasDhBOlx_5ZRJZzc833g8hwn1AY16cvaEclHHK40AdjjQCYqSNzyXWsuSmof8spRcLg8OsDJ6opALUcXA48rlXyVm7G1K28f7/s1600-h/IMG_2310.JPG" onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}"><img alt="" border="0" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5285701444871152322" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjotG5lDE-713rLJkyI1NzCSN6eGEhyphenhyphen-vkrZk9R_qCxvkjasDhBOlx_5ZRJZzc833g8hwn1AY16cvaEclHHK40AdjjQCYqSNzyXWsuSmof8spRcLg8OsDJ6opALUcXA48rlXyVm7G1K28f7/s320/IMG_2310.JPG" style="cursor: pointer; height: 320px; width: 240px;" /></a></div><div style="text-align: justify;">Adam and Jen stopped by to visit and take in the progress and later that day Betsy came by too! In the middle of all the visitors and painting being done, I had an appointment with the flooring guy to quote new flooring. 3 hours later and much negotiation, I decided on new carpet upstairs in Natural plush and laminate hardwood downstairs in a Latte Oak. (Again, loved the name.) The floors will go in Wednesday and Thursday... pictures, of course, to follow! Can't wait!</div>Janinehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05490459139700935904noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9173190871451477776.post-9646257885147453742008-06-13T18:58:00.001-04:002010-10-26T10:55:43.124-04:00Let the Work Begin...<div style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg_Ri9H7WtJWfkTeHsmRS1dxOTqS2gD8nzpK3Dc8WX4kEJcZq_-x-hri4rIlzT-jMXuSDZTGtKsjiwnSdjHvFfagSvE-77WcrMjrTzoKACUYGVOXErhRYRyuE4BIjZ_7PUSMrhzt7ZeCdPj/s1600-h/IMG_2297.JPG" onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}"><img alt="" border="0" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5285693699649623250" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg_Ri9H7WtJWfkTeHsmRS1dxOTqS2gD8nzpK3Dc8WX4kEJcZq_-x-hri4rIlzT-jMXuSDZTGtKsjiwnSdjHvFfagSvE-77WcrMjrTzoKACUYGVOXErhRYRyuE4BIjZ_7PUSMrhzt7ZeCdPj/s400/IMG_2297.JPG" style="cursor: pointer; height: 300px; width: 400px;" /></a></div><div style="text-align: justify;">On Wednesday night, my mom and I begun work on my place. Kristin and her boyfriend, Alex, stopped by to lend a helping hand too. The walls were scrubbed clean, primer rolled on to the first of many walls, and all valances taken down. I was happy to see them go. :) I also was determined to see the chair molding taken down. Thinking this would be a simple prying of a few nails. Not likely, the previous owners had used massive amounts of glue to apply the chair railing and in the end, Alex ripped it off the wall taking a bit of the wall with it and leaving the old wallpaper underneath.</div><div style="text-align: center;"><div style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiKZWtvehtF99KHcXaSIuzFWQLCahrpH23PPBbcqABmkMSc3KrSejcKNQU3zxqh_WTjboMwcNS5gM2UrizRXH79eT93iB6pjF09a5SW2YbzlQYq4UCuCKzypQNQpbekxe29nJOcTHFtFMMU/s1600-h/IMG_2299.JPG" onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}"><img alt="" border="0" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5285694846302204178" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiKZWtvehtF99KHcXaSIuzFWQLCahrpH23PPBbcqABmkMSc3KrSejcKNQU3zxqh_WTjboMwcNS5gM2UrizRXH79eT93iB6pjF09a5SW2YbzlQYq4UCuCKzypQNQpbekxe29nJOcTHFtFMMU/s320/IMG_2299.JPG" style="cursor: pointer; height: 240px; width: 320px;" /></a><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjiHNh66-glPcF56P6j_-udH8qIqNOGIpaWc4yxviIrWlMCsTXxjqm_R2ucunTvSrUKF_oCOOOUnZ-HoRV9Wn6NwBP6XI3rsnNbzQ7ztohGnnx7MRJjktZiQ8iei_8l3GfOOVo_aDtsbYWb/s1600-h/IMG_2304.JPG" onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}"><img alt="" border="0" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5285695334590424322" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjiHNh66-glPcF56P6j_-udH8qIqNOGIpaWc4yxviIrWlMCsTXxjqm_R2ucunTvSrUKF_oCOOOUnZ-HoRV9Wn6NwBP6XI3rsnNbzQ7ztohGnnx7MRJjktZiQ8iei_8l3GfOOVo_aDtsbYWb/s320/IMG_2304.JPG" style="cursor: pointer; height: 240px; width: 320px;" /></a></div><br />

After signing my life away and my name about 1001 times, I finally closed on my condo. :) And no, you don't feel like a famous actress signing autographs at a movie premiere... just in case you were wondering. But it was good, everything went so smoothly and at the end I was given the keys... the keys to my new chapter. </span></span><br />
<span style="font-size: 100%;"> </span><br />
<span style="font-size: 100%;"> <span style="font-family: georgia;">I couldn't wait. I went over to my new home almost immediately to show it off and then again later that day to start the work. Whenever I show people around the unit, I always feel the need to say, "It needs a lot of work, so use your imagination." I sure have. In the 30 days between first walking through the unit with my Realtor, Mariella, my mom and younger sister, Kristin, and up to yesterday when I finally closed, I imagined all the things I would love to do with the place. Built in 1990, the condo is not really outdated like some other places I looked at in my house search, but it could definitely use some freshing up. The unit was also rented recently and shows the wear of its previous owner. Dirty carpet, scuffs on the walls, and remaining tape from posters let you know it had been lived in and loved before me. </span></span><br />
<span style="font-size: 100%;"> </span><br />
<span style="font-size: 100%;"> <span style="font-family: georgia;">My first task will be to deep clean and paint the entire unit. I think just doing this will show a great improvement and make it feel clean as new. I plan to go over tonight, to start the nail hole patching and wall cleaning.... I will post "before" pictures as well for all those that are curious and to compare to as work is done! </span></span></div><span style="font-size: 100%;"> <br />
